C&O Station - Lake Bruce, Indiana
C&O Station - Lake Bruce, Indiana
The C&O depot at Lake Bruce, Indiana was a common standard design for this area, although some were different lengths or a mirror image. Lake Bruce never became a major resort, as did some other area lakes. I don’t know when the depot was closed or demolished, but even the tracks are gone as of 1988. Postcard is from the Bob Albert collection.
CI&S - North Judson, Indiana
CI&S - North Judson, Indiana
The postmark on this card is hard to read, but I believe it is February 14, 1911. Anyway, it is a great view looking north (east) on the Chicago, Indiana & Southern at North Judson, Indiana, The Panhandle (Pennsy) runs across the center of the picture, but the tracks of the Erie and C&O are not visible. The buildings from left to right are: CI&S section house, tower at the PRR and Erie crossing, hotel, Erie depot, CI&S passenger train, a passenger car on the ground, another CI&S building, PRR / CI&S transfer house and the Peoples Grain Co. elevator. Postcard is from the Bob Albert collection.
CSS - LaPorte, Indiana
CSS - LaPorte, Indiana
The date is November 23, 1990 and we are in LaPorte, Indiana. The southbound South Shore steel train is on the NS IMC line at the old WR interlocking crossing of Conrail. The South Shore and the Grand Trunk teamed up to move these trains. The South Shore had trackage rights on NS from Stillwell to Michigan City. I don’t know if the GTW supplied all the engines or if CSS units were used also, I never could catch one of these trains. BTW - the engine is GTW 6418. Photo is by Sandy Goodrick.
CERA Fantrip - Tee Lake, Indiana
CERA Fantrip - Tee Lake, Indiana
The back of the photo reads: “South Shore #1100 & 103, June 8, 1947. CERA railfan special “in the whole” for regular pass. run. On return trip pass this spot (nonstop 18 miles in 15 minutes from New Carlisle to Shops) the train hit 90 mph, the fastest speed attained on the entire trip. This new line car rebuilt from Ind. RR RPO #376 never saw speed like that until that time.” The photo is looking west along the CSS mainline at Tee Lake, Indiana. Charles Able photo, from Hoosier Valley RR Museum collection.
EJ&E Station - Hammond, Indiana
EJ&E Station - Hammond, Indiana
Judging from the car by the station I am guessing that this photo is from about 1950. The Enterprise Coal & Supply Company is one of those businesses from the old days. How many people even know what a stoker is? The only information on this photo is Elgin, Joliet & Eastern station, Hammond, Indiana. If anyone can supply a street name or other information please contact the museum. Photo is from the Bob Albert Collection.
GTW Station - Valparaiso, Indiana
GTW Station - Valparaiso, Indiana
The Grand Trunk Western depot at Valparaiso, Indiana was built around 1910-1917. The building was probably not very old when this photo was made. The depot still stands, but it is up for sale or demolition. The last I heard there was a party that was interested in purchasing and moving the depot. Hopefully it will be saved. Postcard is from the Bob Albert collection.
N&W 611 - HIbbard, Indiana
N&W 611 - HIbbard, Indiana
The long days of summer made this picture possible. Passing through Hibbard, Indiana on June 27, 1987 Norfolk & Western #611 was running about 40 mph heading toward Chicago. The depot and Pennsy diamond was just on the other side of the signal bungalow and that cement curb between the road and the ballast was the edge of the passenger platform. The signal that is partially obscured by smoke now stands just west of the HVRM depot in North Judson. Photo by Bob Albert
NKP Big Load on the IMC - Belfast, Indiana
NKP Big Load on the IMC - Belfast, Indiana
The week-end of April 26, 1958 saw the moving of the highest and widest load moved by rail at that time. It was a 91 ton atomic reactor vessel for a power plant near Detroit, Michigan. Built in Chattanooga, it was delivered by barge to the B&O in Cincinnati, then to the NKP at Rushville, to the C&O at Muncie, to the NKP at Marion, across town to the NYC, then back to the NKP Clover Leaf. There must have a weight or clearance issue to cause the Marion shuffle, but once it was back on the NKP it was interchanged to the IMC division at Kokomo and then went north to Belfast to be interchanged with the C&O for its trip to the Detroit area. The picture is near Belfast, Indiana. Photograph is from the Bob Albert collection.
NKP MoW Truck - Argos, Indiana
NKP MoW Truck - Argos, Indiana
Now that I’ve made the boat fans happy, let’s give the truck fans something. Back about 1962 this International truck was used by the Nickel Plate’s maintenance of way forces at Argos, Indiana. I think the welder used this truck. Photo is by Bob Albert.
NKP Wreck - Mentone, Indiana
NKP Wreck - Mentone, Indiana
On May 1, 1947 a westbound Nickel Plate freight train derailed 17 at the east end of Clemer siding, just west of Mentone, Indiana. The engine and the first 17 cars did not derail, but the next 13 box cars of merchandise and 4 tank cars of coal tar scattered along the right of way. No one was injured and a broken wheel or axle is believed to be the culprit. The AP Wirephoto is from the Bob Albert collection.
NYC Yard - Elkhart, Indiana
NYC Yard - Elkhart, Indiana
Back in the mid-1960s the St. Joe Valley Model Railroad Club took a tour of the New York Central’s new yard at Elkhart, Indiana. Part of the tour was going into the hump tower and I was able to shoot a picture of the engine service area from the steps. I am sure it has changed quite a bit since then, but is still very busy. Photo is by Bob Albert.
PRR 18th Street - Logansport, Indiana
PRR 18th Street - Logansport, Indiana
Remember that boat on an HO scale flat car that Athearn produced back in the 1960s? Well, here’s the full size one. I don’t know when or by whom the photo was taken, but it appears to be at 18th Street in Logansport, Indiana. I’m guessing that we are still in the Pennsy era and by the looks of that flagman is a cold day. Photo is from the Bob Albert Collection.
PRR Head-On - Warsaw, Indiana
PRR Head-On - Warsaw, Indiana
On Friday, January 25, 1957, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, a head on collision occurred at Warsaw, Indiana. I believe that Pennsy shark nose was an eastbound train with four units, the lead unit 9724 is pictured here with its nose on the end platform of the GP type locomotive that it hit. Five crew men were injured and about 150 hogs were killed. Both trains were pulling 116 cars. The AP Wirephoto is from the Bob Albert collection.
PRR Lima-Built - South Bend, Indiana
PRR Lima-Built - South Bend, Indiana
The South Bend branch of the Pennsy hosted at least one exotic locomotive. Engine #5672, a Lima-Hamilton 2500 horse power, C-C trucked transfer unit, is shown at Chippewa Avenue in South Bend, Indiana on October 11, 1952. The train is certainly not taxing the power of the 5672. This area is now entirely built up and has lost its rural image. Photo is by Sandy Goodrick.
Walkerton Junction
Walkerton Junction
The date of the photo is probably in the 1910s or maybe a little earlier. There are a lot of buildings in this picture and most are railroad related. From left to right: the B&O depot, don’t know about the building behind the depot, next is a small building at the crossing of the CI&S and LE&W, The CI&S water tank, next is a CI&S and LE&W transfer house, the next building is possibly a B&O and CI&S freight house, then the three story tower, a crossing watchman shanty, the CI&S depot and across the tracks is, what I assume, is a section house. Today, of all these buildings only the tower remains and it is now two stories tall. The Chicago, Indiana & Southern is also gone. Postcard is from the Bob Albert collection.
